‘Nurse Jackie’ returning for sixth season

SEASONED: Falco.

Showtime’s Emmy-award winning series “Nurse Jackie” has been given the green light to go back into production for a sixth season at Kaufman-Astoria studios in Queens.

Work on the new season is slated to begin in the fall.

The dark comedy, which stars Edie Falco as a recovering drug addict — who also happens to be a great nurse — has weathered a number of changes at the top.

The most notable changes were the departure of executive producers Liz Brixius and Linda Wallem and the exit of Eve Best, who played Jackie’s best friend, Dr. O’Hara.

The show is now run by “Dexter” producer Clyde Phillips. He sought to play up the comedy on the series while showing Jackie dealing with the often-lonely task of maintaining sobriety — following an acrimonious divorce from her husband Kevin (Dominic Fumusa).

She also got back into the dating game with a cop (Adam Ferrara).

Falco’s character, Jackie Peyton, will celebrate her first year of sobriety in the June 16 season finale, with some surprises in store.

“Nurse Jackie” now joins the ranks of Showtime’s other long-running comedy, “Weeds,” which ran for nine seasons before ending last September.

“ ‘Nurse Jackie’ is an essential part of the Showtime brand, and we are thrilled with the series’ growth in its fifth season,” Showtime entertainment chief David Nevins said in a statement. “I’m excited to get to see the next chapter in Jackie’s life.”

“Nurse Jackie” is averaging over 3 million viewers this season with repeats, DVR viewership and On Demand factored it.
