Indianapolis Colt safety Joe Lefeged was arrested early yesterday — in the 37th bust of an NFL player this year — after officers found an unregistered semiautomatic pistol in a car he was riding in, police said.
Lefeged, 25, was a passenger in a Chevy Camaro that motored away from a traffic stop for speeding in northeast Washington state.
Officers smelled marijuana in the car and found a container of vodka and orange juice in the center console and a .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol under the front passenger seat, police documents show.
A receipt shows that Lefeged bought the gun this year for about $900, cops said.
Court records show Lefeged has been charged with carrying an unlicensed pistol and was being held until a preliminary hearing Tuesday.
The news came the day that semipro football player Odin Lloyd — allegedly executed by former Patriot star tight end Aaron Hernandez on June 17 — was remembered in a Boston church by loved ones.
“We’re going to stay focused and stay strong,” Mike Branch, Lloyd’s football coach, told The Boston Globe. “This team is a tight-knit team, and he meant so much to this team.”
Hernandez is being held without bail.
