LI cops only ‘returned fire’

The Suffolk County man killed by cops was babbling loudly about Mayor Bloomberg before police arrived — and then opened fire on responding officers, authorities said yesterday.

Neighbors called the cops about the disturbance on the tree-lined street in Shirley at around 10:30 p.m. Friday, police said.

The man emerged from his back yard at his Carlton Drive East property with a helmet and a bulletproof vest and saw that cops had responded to the scene, authorities said.

“That’s when he begins to fire at them with a shotgun,” said Detective Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick, commanding officer of the Suffolk County Homicide Squad.

He let off five rounds, authorities said.

The middle-aged man, who has not yet been identified, went inside his home and came out of the front door with a rifle to again take aim at cops, authorities said, adding that one of the 15 bullets he fired grazed an officer’s holster.

Five weapons were recovered from his home, including the shotgun and rifle allegedly used to attack police.

The three others were rifles.
