Satin plays it smooth for Mets

With Ike Davis demoted and Lucas Duda injured, the desperate Mets called up Josh Satin. He has been nothing short of a surprise and a savior according to manager Terry Collins, giving them more than they had any right to expect, and last night he helped give them a 5-4, come-from-behind, 13-inning win over Arizona.

Satin went 3-for-6, knocking in the tying run with a single in the ninth inning and scoring in the 13th on Andrew Brown’s game-winning hit. And after it was over, Collins admitted Satin is playing his way into the team’s plans.

“No doubt we’ve certainly got to take a look at the situation. Josh deserves some at-bats. He’s getting big hits,” Collins said. “It doesn’t matter if they’re left-handed or right-handed, he’s getting big hits for us.

“I tell you what, every team has somebody that surprises you and saves you, and right now he’s our savior. This guy has come up and filled a big hole for us.’’

Satin has reached base safely in 12 straight games, and has batted .444 in a career-long seven-game hitting streak.

With the Mets trailing 3-0, they got runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth, the last of which when Satin singled to left-center to plate Marlon Byrd with the tying run. Then, down 4-3 in the 13th, Satin stroked a one-out double to right. After John Buck was walked behind him and Matt Harvey sacrificed them both over, Brown plated them both with the walk-off single.

“Losing a game like this is — I don’t want to say devastating — but it makes it not worth it. Winning a game like this just makes the 5 1/2 hours we’re out there that much more worth it, walking a team off at the end there’s no greater feeling,’’ Satin said. “Everybody was too tired.’’

Satin said his increased playing time has helped him relax at the plate and be more patient. Collins saidSatin has a lot of movement in his swing, making it hard for him to get into a rhythm with irregular playing time. But Satin still is pulling for Davis to find his swing in Triple-A Las Vegas.

“He’s a very good player and a good friend of mine, so I want him to do well. If when he comes back he’s playing and I’m not, that’s fine,’’ Satin said. “Obviously I want to play, but I just want to put myself in the best position to be a part of this team in the future, whatever way that is. If that’s coming off the bench, fine.’’

“I’ve come up just for spurts but hopefully my play until he comes back allows me to be a part of this team in the future, because I think I can help the team. I think we have a bright future in the coming years and I want to be a part of it…I have a long way to go to really prove to them I can be a valuable piece of this team in the future when we’re ready to contend, which hopefully is soon.’’
