Liu over Quinn for gay OK

A prominent Queens gay and lesbian club has voted to endorse local pol John Liu for mayor over City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, The Post has learned.

The Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club of Queens is the second of five prominent LGBT groups to nix a nod for Quinn — who is bidding to become the city’s first female and openly gay mayor.

Getting the group’s backing was a coup for Comptroller Liu — who has been lagging in the polls — but also a sign that the gay vote is far from a lock for Quinn.

While the speaker has won the backing of three major LGBT clubs — Gay and Lesbian Independent Democrats, The Stonewall Democratic Club of New York City, and Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn — she was snubbed by The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club in Manhattan, which is backing former Comptroller Bill Thompson.

In the secret-ballot vote Tuesday, Liu got 56 percent of the Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club’s vote to 37 percent for Quinn — even though the co-chair of the club’s campaign works for Quinn.

“I’m proud and honored to have the support of this organization,” Liu said yesterday.

Quinn’s spokesman Mike Morey said she “has wide support from clubs, committees, elected officials, and activists from across the five boroughs.”
