Earlier today the White House released a beautiful black-and-white photo of President Obama and his family visiting Nelson Mandela’s prison cell on Robben Island in Cape Town, South Africa.

In the picture the President is holding his daughter Sasha while Michelle and Malia stand close by.

The photo was taken last month while the first family toured Africa.

Earlier in the same trip Obama, the first lady and their two daughters visited the the infamous “House of Slaves” and its “Door of No Return” in Dakar, Senegal.

The door opens onto the Atlantic Ocean and is said to have been the last place slaves spent time before they were shipped to North America.

“Obviously, for an African American, an African American president, to be able to visit this site, I think, gives me even greater motivation in terms of human rights around the world,” Obama said.
