Giants waive RB Scott, sign lineman

It does not exactly represent a shakeup, but the winless Giants on Tuesday made some roster maneuverings, waiving running back Da’Rel Scott and signing center Dallas Reynolds, who started 14 games last season for the Eagles.

Scott made the team coming out of training camp only because Andre Brown was put on short-term injured reserve with a broken left leg. Scott certainly received a shot to make an impression, but he failed to do so.

He had 16 rushing attempts in four games, gaining 56 yards. He also caught 10 passes for 98 yards, but he was too often in the middle of big trouble. In the season opener in Dallas, he failed to hold onto a screen pass from Eli Manning, and the ball deflected to Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr for a game-clinching interception and touchdown return. Scott also was involved in a botched play this past Sunday in Kansas City that resulted in Manning getting credited with a lost fumble.

Scott was originally a 2011 seventh-round draft pick of the Giants. His departure means the Giants are likely ready to give veteran Brandon Jacobs and perhaps Michael Cox expanded roles. They are the only two running backs on the roster other than David Wilson.

In a sign veteran center David Baas is not ready to return, the Giants added Reynolds, 29, a BYU product who was signed in 2009 by the Eagles as an undrafted free agent. He kicked around their practice squad until 2012, when he stepped in after starting center Jason Kelce went down with a knee injury and was lost for the season, elevating Reynolds into the starting lineup. He was cut Aug. 30 by new coach Chip Kelly.

The Giants also made a practice squad transaction, re-signing WR Marcus Harris and terminating the contract of OL Steven Baker.
