Cops shoot gunman dead in Bronx

An armed man was shot and killed by police Thursday night after foot pursuit in the Bronx, according to law enforcement sources.

Officers were responding to a call of shots fired and a man with a gun at the Castle Hill Houses around 11:00 p.m., Thursday, police said. The perp fled and two officers gave chase.

A witness told cops the gunman fired on cops twice before they returned fire, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

“We have a witness who said that the individual fired at the police officers,” he told reporters Friday. “The individual then runs to another location where this witness says he fires at police officers again.”

Investigators, however, still have not recovered shell casings from that location, Kelly said.

The chase continued to a third location nearby, where six cops fired a total of 17 shots, killing the suspect, he added.

Police recovered a .45 caliber handgun next to the suspect and they found four shell casings on Randall and Olmstead avenues, where the confrontation began, Kelly said.

Both officers were taken to Weiler Hospital in the Bronx where they were treated for trauma.
