Ex-Nassau executive Thomas Suozzi will run to get old job back

Former Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi wants his old job back.

The Democrat announced Wednesday that he plans to enter the race. He was narrowly defeated in a bid for a third term 2009 by Republican Edward Mangano.

Suozzi says he wants to restore fiscal stability. Nassau has been under the control of a state agency for more than a decade. He cites “irresponsible borrowing and skyrocketing debt.”

Mangano spokesman Brian Nevin said Suozzi was defeated after hiking property taxes, spending too much “and leaving behind an utter mess.”

In 2006, Suozzi lost to Eliot Spitzer in a primary for governor.

He was mentioned as a possible successor when Hillary Rodham Clinton resigned her Senate seat to become secretary of state. The job went to Kirsten Gillibrand.
