End of an era: Roseland Ballroom closing

New York’s legendary concert hall Roseland Ballroom will close after nearly a century in the music business, Billboard.com reports.

The sprawling Midtown venue — which has hosted acts such as Louis Armstrong, The Rolling Stones and Madonna — will shut its doors in April, according to an internal e-mail obtained by the music Website.

The closure likely comes due spiking property values in the neighborhood, not lack of revenue from concerts, the site reports.

“[It’s] a huge loss for concerts in New York City. I saw Nirvana there and will never forget that show,” said Ken Fermaglich of the talent booking firm Agency Group.

The 3,500-seat auditorium on 51st Street and Broadway opened in 1919.
