Teen crushed to death in horrific garbage truck accident

A teen who had just started a new job at a Brooklyn recycling center was crushed to death yesterday in a horrific accident involving a garbage-truck compactor, authorities said.

Luis Camarillo, 18, of The Bronx, died as he worked at the back of the truck at a private Plymouth Street recycling plant in DUMBO at 10:30 a.m., said cops.

Somehow, Camarillo got into a position where a piece of the truck’s compactor knocked him in the chest. He was then crushed by the truck’s hydraulic system, said officials.

Neighbors were shocked by the gruesome death.

“It is so horrible,” said Jason-Louise Graham, 28, who works for an art dealership and lives in a loft above the plant. “It’s a little scary because people live here, too.”

When EMS arrived, they found Camarillo unconscious. He was declared dead at Long Island College Hospital.

Camarillo’s grieving relatives said they had been pleased when he started the new job three weeks ago at Chambers Paper Fibres, a family-run business.

“He had something to do to make money and keep him out of trouble. His mother was proud,” said his uncle, Miguel Ariza, 48.

He lived in Mott Haven with his 4-year-old sister and his mom, Dalia Gervacio — who was “devastated” by the tragedy, a relative said.

“The pain of a mother has no words. That was her only son,” said cousin Lucero Ariza, 22.

“He used to play soccer a lot and he was a nice guy,” Ariza said. “He was always with his family.”

Camarillo was born in Chicago and moved to the city with his family when he was 5, Ariza said.

The NYPD and federal safety inspectors are investigating the tragic accident.
