St. John’s, Stony Brook each earn NIT bids

St. John’s and Stony Brook will get new life in the NIT.

St. John’s, after a rough end to the regular season, is a No. 5 seed and will meet No. 4 St. Joseph’s on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the first round. Stony Brook, a No. 7 seed, meets No. 2 UMass on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m.

Stony Brook (24-7) was the America East favorite before bowing out against Albany in the conference semifinals. The Seawolves finished first with a 14-2 record. St. John’s (16-13) had its own chance at the NCAA tournament as a bubble team before losing five straight and seven of eight to end the season.
