TruTV highlights best commercials of 2013

One downside of watching all your TV shows via DVR is to skip the commercials — missing the rare funny ones.

To help, truTV has compiled the most hilarious spots of the past 12 months into its annual special “Funniest Commercials of the Year,” premiering Sunday at 9 p.m.

Host John Henson (“Wipeout”) returns for his second year to count down 2013’s top 20 spots — complete with corny filler dialogue — including some from around the world never before seen on American television.

Memorable ads include the Kmart “Ship My Pants” spot, which promotes the retailer’s store-to-home delivery service — with customers proudly declaring an action that’s one letter off an unsanitary faux pas.

Best Buy’s Super Bowl commercial starring Amy Poehler is also there, which features the “Parks and Recreation” actress asking a store employee funny questions about mobile technology.

Geico’s “Hump Day Camel” makes the list, asking burned out office workers mid-week to “Guess what day it is?”
A Foot Locker ad imagines a world where everything is right — like Mike Tyson returning Evander Holyfield’s unattached ear and Dennis Rodman booking a one-way ticket to North Korea.

Dads are also a common theme. One dad plays dress-up with his young princess-loving daughter for some Doritos — and his friends get in on the action. In a spot for Converse, a wannabe-hip dad sews an Amish-looking prom dress for his teen daughter. And a kid with a comb-over acts out the drudgery of his father’s adult life in an ad for Jell-O pudding.

To fill out the hour, the special also spotlights ads in various categories like those with animals, babies, etc. and looks at top commercials from years past — like 2012’s No. 1, Doritos’ grandma with a slingshot baby.
