Cuomo, abortion and voters

The Issue: Whether the abortion bill Gov. Cuomo is pushing reflects the needs and wishes of New Yorkers.

It’s disgusting that Gov. Cuomo would go to such lengths, tripping all over himself to promote a bill even ardent liberals oppose (“An Abortion Bill NY Won’t Like,” Michael Benjamin, PostOpinion, April 2).

Cuomo was raised a Catholic. He might try to say that he opposes in his personal life the very measures he’s promoting “for the public good.” The only good he’s trying to promote is his own.

We’ve long stopped expecting any shred of integrity from most politicians. We can only hope that New York legislators are more astute than Cuomo and a lot less self-serving.

Let’s encourage them to do the right thing and soundly defeat this abortion of a bill.

Contrary to Benjamin’s misleading argument, the Reproductive Health Act would finally codify what Roe v. Wade intended 40 years ago: to make a woman’s right to choose a private medical decision instead of grounds for potential prosecution.

Currently, New York law does not recognize the difference between a woman exercising her right in choosing to terminate her pregnancy and a criminal who kills a pregnant woman’s fetus.

This bill would account for this distinction, as well as safeguard a woman’s right to choose, which three-quarters of New York voters want.
