Butler’s 7 RBIs flip Phils

Billy Butler was excited his hit drove in three runs and he was standing on second base. It got a whole lot better for Butler when the umpires returned from the video review room.

Butler’s hit was ruled a grand slam after the replays were checked, he tied a Royals franchise record with seven RBIs and Kansas City held on for a 9-8 win over the Phillies yesterday in Philadelphia.

“I didn’t know if it was a homer or not,” Butler said. “I was just happy to get the runs in.”

Cardinals 14, Giants 3

In San Francisco, Matt Cain became the first Giants pitcher to allow nine runs in an inning since 1902.

The Cardinals chased Cain (0-1) while scoring nine times in the fourth inning. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Cain was the first Giants pitcher to give up that many runs in one inning since John Cronin on Sept. 27, 1902, for New York against the Brooklyn Superbas.

Reds 6, Nationals 3

In Cincinnati, Johnny Cueto outlasted Stephen Strasburg in a highly anticipated matchup and Jay Bruce drove in three runs as the Reds wrapped up a 4-2 opening week homestand.

Rockies 9, Padres 1

In Denver, Dexter Fowler hit a two-run homer and Jhoulys Chacin pitched effectively into the seventh inning, helping Rockies to their first sweep of the Padres at Coors Field in 10 years.

Braves 5, Cubs 1

In Atlanta, Tim Hudson pitched six-plus strong innings and added an RBI and Ramiro Pena hit a two-run single to power the Braves.

Dodgers 6, Pirates 2

In Los Angeles, Hyun-Jin Ryu earned his first major league victory, shrugging off a two-run homer in the first inning by Andrew McCutchen, and the Dodgers finished off a sweep of the Pirates.

Diamondbacks 8, Brewers 7 (11)

In Milwaukee, pinch hitter Eric Hinske belted a two-run homer in the 11th inning as the Diamondbacks completed a sweep of the Brewers.
