Jerry Jones: I’m doing my ‘best work’ as Cowboys GM

He’s his own mildest critic.

Jerry Jones said Friday that he’s doing some of his “best work” as Cowboys general manager, despite the team’s 5-5 record and not reaching the playoffs since 2010.

“The facts are I really do think, the way things have rolled out, I’m getting to do some of the best work that I’ve done, relatively speaking in my career, over these last several years,” Jones told KRLD-FM.

“Relatively speaking,” he might be right. The Cowboys won the Super Bowl in 1996 and Jones took over as GM one season later. Since then, the storied franchise has one playoff win (2010 wild-card round over the Eagles).

“It’s unfortunate that over these last five or six years that we haven’t had a few things turn right for us at the end of the season — needing to win one of out of two games to get into the playoffs, having a healthy quarterback, all of those things. But we’ve been a lot closer than it seems,” said Jones, whose Cowboys take on the Giants on Sunday in a crucial NFC East showdown as both teams try to chase down the Eagles in the division.
