Addressing co-op bias

A controversial City Council bill aiming to do away with discrimination by co-op boards will finally get a hearing today after being stalled for three years.

The legislation requires that the boards issue the same applications to all aspiring homeowners, regardless of race, age or ethnicity, and inform those who didn’t make the cut within 45 days.

“There is no question that discrimination goes on in the purchasing and selling of a co-op. Anybody who has been involved in the buying and selling of coops … if they’re going to be honest knows that truth,” said bill sponsor Lew Fidler (D-Brooklyn).

The bill is scheduled to be heard in the Council’s Housing and Buildings committee.
