TWEAK SCHOOL CONTROL: BETSY

Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum will push to extend mayoral control of the city’s public schools — with revisions giving parents more input and city officials more oversight over policy and budget.

Gotbaum said yesterday that she plans to meet with Gov. Paterson and state lawmakers Tuesday in Albany.

Gotbaum’s plan would continue to give City Hall the power to appoint the chancellor and a majority of the appointees on the Panel on Educational Policy.

But panel members would serve fixed four-year terms instead of solely at the pleasure of the mayor, and the chancellor would be stripped of a vote.

The comptroller and other budget watchdogs would have more oversight to audit the Department of Education.

The law giving the mayor authority over city education expires June 30.
