The ricin-letter sender: shooting himself in foot

The Issue: Ricin-laced letters sent to Mayor Bloomberg and President Obama denouncing gun-control efforts.

***

The ricin-laden letters sent to Mayor Bloomberg cross the line in the gun-control fight (“Mike Poison Plot,” May 30).

The nut who sent the letters is obviously unstable, and his weapons must be confiscated.

Additionally, it is wrong to surmise that the National Rifle Association and politicians who disagree with Bloomberg put a bulls-eye on the mayor.

In fact, pro-gun advocates argue that the gun-violence problem is mental instability, not gun ownership. Does the ricin nut even understand that while he claims that Bloomberg’s position violates his Second Amendment rights, the nut is violating Bloomberg’s rights?

Threatening letters and dangerous ricin were sent through the mail without regard for anyone who came in contact with them. These are the irrational crazies fighting against gun control.

Little do they know that their actions are excellent examples for gun control.

I don’t know what is more shocking about the ricin-laced letter that was recently mailed to Bloomberg — the fact that anyone actually still mails letters these days or that the mailer sent ricin instead of a more lethal substance, such as a 16-ounce soft drink.

Law-abiding citizens should have no fear of being stripped of their right to own guns in order to protect their families and homes. President Obama and Bloomberg are simply advocating for common-sense gun-control laws to be passed — banning military-style assault weapons, limiting the capacity of magazines and establishing universal background checks on all gun purchases.

It shouldn’t be the end of the world for gun-carrying folks. It’s paranoid thinking that has some up in arms. The individual(s) behind the brazen act of sending ricin-laced letters to the White House, as well as to Bloomberg, is apparently willing to harm and even kill due to an irrational fear of gun legislation.

I can’t help but wonder if whoever is behind this has an arsenal of weapons and ammunition and is just waiting to have a shoot-out with the law.
