Holy fury over B’klyn ‘nightclub’ plan

Thou shalt not try opening a noisy nightclub in Brooklyn under the guise of a kiddie music school.

A Carroll Gardens priest is accusing the owner of the popular Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg of lying about a business venture eyed for a former warehouse near the Gowanus Canal.

Peter Shapiro has said his Rock and Roll Playhouse, planned for 280 Bond St., isn’t a “nightclub” but a music-education play space for children during the day that would covert into an adult space at night, offering a full-service bar, food and low-key music acts.

But the Rev. Robert Powers of the St. Paul and St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church a block away says Shapiro’s remarks conflict with what the entrepreneur confessed to him and other neighbors during a private sit-down on May 14.

“At the meeting, he basically presented that this would be a well-managed nightclub, and for him to say it’s not is just contrary to what was said to the neighbors,” Powers said.

“He can say it’s not a nightclub, but what is a nightclub?” Powers said. “This is an aggressive businessman who sees something he can develop.”

According to the project’s Web site, kids would be able to take classes like Beatles for Babies and Drawing Rock and Roll.

But opponents have begun an online petition to have Community Board 6 and the State Liquor Authority reject Shapiro’s liquor license.
