Holder told: You got some explaining to do

WASHINGTON — House Republicans yesterday kept up the pressure on US Attorney General Eric Holder, as they pursue an investigation into whether he lied to Congress last month by claiming he played no role in snooping on the press despite his signing a warrant to investigate a reporter.

“We want to hear from [him]. . . [There] is a clear contradiction between his statement and the facts as we know them at this point,” Rep. Bob Goodlattte (R-Va.), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told “Fox News Sunday.”

Republicans haven’t accused Holder of perjury or called for him to resign, but Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) suggested on CBS’s “Face the Nation” that “it would be tough for Holder to answer the question of whether he can still effectively serve the president.”

Holder signed off on a court-approved warrant to snoop on Fox reporter James Rosen’s e-mails in a probe into his reporting on North Korea.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) yesterday told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that Holder did not lie, since Rosen was never prosecuted.

“I haven’t seen a single accusation that would prevent him from continuing to do his job,” Schumer said.

“I don’t think any good criminal lawyer would say there is a scintilla of evidence of perjury.”
