Long bans won’t stop drug cheats

* Alex Rodriguez and his ilk made their multi-millions already. Suspending A-Rod for 100 games makes no difference whatsoever to him at his stage in life. I do not see what the lessons to be learned are here. To make the kind of money A-Rod and most of his accused brethren are making is justification enough to try anything.

Filling the Gil

* With negative headlines in baseball every day about players being accused of using performance-enhancing drugs, we hear people still supporting the likes of Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Manny Ramirez eventually getting into the Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, the epitome of class, dedication and hard work on the field and in the dugout throughout his distinguished and successful career — the late Gil Hodges — still is not in the Hall of Fame. Hey, baseball — wake up!

Taxing situation

* For years I believed the denials of performance-enhancing drug use by the likes of Marion Jones and Lance Armstrong, and foolishly gave them my sympathy. Now I don’t believe the protestations of these apparent baseball cheaters. Who can I trust — besides the IRS?

Way to go Kidd!

* Jason Kidd arguably was the best all-around point guard in NBA history. In his prime, he single-handedly put the Nets on his back, leading them to back-to-back Finals. Kidd brought an unparalleled combination of passing, rebounding, defense and leadership to a league in which most players take the first three quarters off. We may never see his likes again.

‘Red’ in the face

* Phil Mushnick is right: It is a matter of common decency Washington’s NFL team should stop calling itself the Redskins. This is one time the accusation of racism is accurate. That doesn’t make those who defend the name racist, but it does make them wrong.
