Kerry’s wife in hospital

NANTUCKET, Mass. — The wife of US Secretary of State John Kerry, Teresa Heinz Kerry, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition yesterday, officials said.

Heinz Kerry, 74, was stricken with an unknown condition while at the family’s vacation home, the Boston Globe reported.

John Kerry was also inside the house on Hulbert Avenue at the time, according to the paper.

Nantucket Police Lt. Jerry Adams says a call requesting medical aid was received just after 3:30 p.m., and an ambulance was dispatched to the home.

Hospital spokesman Noah Brown said the 74-year-old Heinz Kerry was admitted to the emergency room of Nantucket Cottage Hospital at around 3:30 p.m. yesterday.

She arrived at the facility in critical condition, but and was eventually stabilized, Brown said.

She was then flown to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

“The family is grateful for the outpouring of support it has received and aware of the interest in her condition, but they ask for privacy at this time,” a Kerry family spokesman said.

In December 2009, doctors treated Heinz Kerry for breast cancer.

She is the widow of former US Sen. John Heinz, and the heir to the Heinz foods fortune.
