Jets’ Feely boots four FGs in homecoming

TAMPA, Fla. — With his high school just two blocks north of Raymond James Stadium, Jets kicker Jay Feely made yesterday a memorable homecoming.

Feely, who grew up just blocks away from the stadium (you can see his high school from the stands and the press box), kicked four field goals in the Jets’ 26-3 win over the Bucs.

His field goals of 40, 24, 49 and 49 yards in the first half boosted the Jets to a 19-0 halftime lead.

“It’s pretty cool,’’ Feely said. “I saw so many people from the Bucs staff who work the game who I know and had so many friends here. I came back here the two years I was out of football [after college]. I came to a bunch of the Bucs’ games just to watch. So every time I come back here it’s like a reminder of how blessed I am and how far I’ve come since sitting here watching those games.’’

Rex Ryan, who celebrated his 47th birthday yesterday, reached back to his father’s glory days with the Jets when he invited Earl Christy to speak to the team Saturday night.

Christy played cornerback for three years with the Jets from 1966-68, his last game coming in Super Bowl III, and he proudly showed the ring on his finger that he earned as a member of Buddy Ryan’s championship defense.

“It was terrific to hear just how much passion he has for football and especially how much passion and love he has for the Jets,” LB Calvin Pace said of Christy, who’s now a talk-show host for a local Tampa radio station and a partner for a In The Game Inc., a sports marketing firm. “He really had our attention and it was good to hear that.”

CB Darrelle Revis’ fourth-quarter interception was his sixth of the season and further cemented his place in the Pro Bowl and perhaps the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year.

LB Calvin Pace, S James Ihedigbo and CB Donald Strickland each had a sack. For Ihedigbo and Strickland, it was their first career sack.

Rookie RB Shonn Greene is beginning to become a ball protection problem. Greene, who has 71 carries this season, lost his third fumble when he was stripped in the third quarter at the end of a 25-yard gain.

After holding the Bucs to 0-for-14 on third-down conversions, the Jets have held their last two opponents to one conversion in the last 25 attempts (the Bills were 1-of-11 last week).

Before the first quarter was complete, WR Brad Smith had completed a pass, caught a pass and run the ball. Smith highlighted the first quarter by taking a direct snap as the up back on a punt and throwing to S Eric Smith for a 27-yard gain on a fourth-and-7 play from the Jets’ 39-yard line. It was the Jets’ fourth successful fake punt this season. It was Smith’s first career reception.

With regard to the great starting safety debate that has had Ryan agitated — Kerry Rhodes or Eric Smith? — they both started as the Jets began the game in a nickel package using three safeties.

When the Jets played their base defense, Smith and Jim Leonhard were the safeties. Rhodes had an interception, his third of the season, with 4:06 remaining in the game.

Asked about his role, Rhodes, who admitted during the week to getting frustrated about it in practice, said he was “cool’’ with it.

DE Marques Douglas said he noticed the Bucs’ players wilting in the heat, not the Jets.

“There was a time when you saw four of their defensive linemen on their knee,’’ Douglas said. “This is supposed to be their advantage, the hot weather. But we showed that we can play in any kind of weather.”

TE Matthew Mulligan’s 2-yard reception in the third quarter was the first reception of his career….Danny Woodhead’s 24-yard reception was a career long. He finished 3-35 receiving and 4-17 rushing….The Jets are now 9-1 all-time against Tampa Bay and have won the last nine meetings.
