Queens chocolate co.’s workers wait for word from Haiti

More than 100 Haitian employees at a New York City chocolate factory are still awaiting word from relatives after the devastating earthquake in the island nation.

Pierre Jackson, Madelaine Chocolate Novelties Inc.’s shop steward, said Friday that he has been working with elected officials to help get word to his co-workers.

But he said that so far the news has been grim: One worker lost four relatives.

Many of the Haitians work on the factory floor making chocolate-covered roses and gold-foil wrapped coins.

The company produces about 20 million pounds of candy each year at the 200,000-square-foot factory in Rockaway Beach, Queens.

It has 450 workers. The company believes it’s one of the city’s largest employers of Haitians.
