Stabbing at Algonquin

There’s only one thing at The Algonquin hotel that’s sharper than Dorothy Parker’s wit — the butter knives in the kitchen!

An angry waiter proved that Sunday, when he picked up one of the normally dull blades during a brawl in the legendary hotel’s eatery and wound up stabbing a sous chef and a host, police said.

Jesus Payano, 43, was arrested for assault after the fight, which began at about 5 p.m. at the West 44th Street hotel.

The trouble started when sous chef Christopher Goodwin got angry because Payano was playing a radio, and shut it off.

The dispute escalated, and Payano allegedly grabbed the knife and slashed Goodwin in the hand.

Host John Sierra tried to break up the fight, but his hand, too, was wounded.

Hotel officials thought Goodwin threw the first punch and canned him, but Goodwin, who was not charged, denied hitting Payano.

The suspect is free on $1,500 bail.
