Softball playoff roundup: Capozucca’s perfection leads Poly to NYSAIS final

Victoria Capozucca didn’t leave anything to chance in her final game in Bay Ridge.

The Poly Prep senior ace, who hasn’t lost a game at home in five seasons, pitched a perfect game and struck out 15 batters in No. 1 Poly Prep’s 6-0 win against No. 5 Hackley in the NYSAISAA semifinals Monday. The Blue Devils will meet No. 2 Horace Mann in the championship game Wednesday at Manhattanville College in Westchester. They are trying to extend their record streak to five straight state titles.

Capozucca also did it with the bat. She had a two-run double in the first inning for the second game in a row to give Poly an early, 2-0 cushion. She wouldn’t need anything more than that, though Erica Sollazzo added an RBI single late in the game.

“That was really the big hit of the game,” coach Mildred Piscopo said of Capozucca’s double.

Now the focus turns to Horace Mann, a team Poly Prep has beaten twice this season. In the first meeting, though, the Blue Devils won just 1-0. As the old saying goes, it’s hard to beat a team three times in one season.

“I’ve seen it happen,” Piscopo said. “It happened to our lacrosse team this year.”

But psychologically, Poly is in a good spot. The Blue Devils beat the Lions, 9-2, two weeks ago.

“I feel good about that, the kids feel good about that,” Piscopo said. “It’s fresh on their minds.”
