GOP golf event has a laugh at embattled Silver’s expense

They’ll be teeing off on Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.

A top Republican in the state Senate is holding a golf fund-raiser Thursday that urges donors to take a swing at the embattled Democratic leader.

“Shoot Well and Win Big!,” the invitation for Senate Deputy Majority Coalition Leader Tom Libous’ event says.

“Can you hit the longest drive to get you farthest from the Speaker?”

Above the statement is a distant picture of Silver on the golf course.

The invite for the outing at The Links at Hiawatha Landing in upstate Apalachin also asks: “How close are you to the Senate Majority Coalition Leadership” – with close-up shots of Senate Coalition co-leaders Dean Skelos and Jeff Klein.

The zinger at Silver comes after the speaker’s leadership has been called into question. He’ been accused of mishandling sexual harassment complaints – including initial accusations that two female staffers leveled against Vito Lopez.

“I don’t mean to add to his problems. But in our business you have to have fun once in a while,” Libous said.

“If people can’t take a little humor, that’s too bad.”

But you have to pay to play: Libous is charging $2,500 for a foursome and $750 for an individual player. He expects to net $100,000 for his campaign kitty.

Two golfers will get a chance to win $5,000 for sinking a 50-foot putt. A donor who gets a hole-in-one wins a brand new car.
