Hollywood hypocrisy

Kudos to Kyle Smith for showing what a hypocrite the Hollywood liberal elite is when it snubbed the documentary “Waiting for ‘Superman’ ” for an Academy Award nomination (” ‘Superman’ Slapped,” PostOpinion, Jan. 28).

The movie points out how badly New York City’s education system is failing our children, but since the teachers union is heavily Democratic and contributes a lot of money to liberal politicians, Hollywood won’t dare acknowledge what a great piece of filmmaking Davis Guggenheim created.

Of course, if the teachers union were run by Republicans, the Academy would run out of trophies from all the awards the movie would win.

“Waiting for ‘Superman’ ” is undoubtedly deserving of an Oscar nomination — not only because it denounces a growing societal problem, but also because its sheer cinematic narrative is so compelling.

The irony in this unfortunate business, however, is that filmmaker Guggenheim conveniently won an Oscar for the debatable “An Inconvenient Truth,” yet he is discriminated against for exposing the truth about our failing school system.

It’s a bad day for the Academy.

If “Waiting for ‘Superman’ ” had been a pro-teachers-union movie, it would have received critical acclaim from the Academy and a huge thumbs-up from the teachers union.

Hollywood will never reward a film for going against them — and by “them,” I mean the liberals.

They loved the director when he did “An Inconvenient Truth” but shun him now.
