Towering opposition to Seaport skyscraper

A new project that could bring a skyscraper to the South Street Seaport was presented to skeptical members of a lower Manhattan community board Tuesday.

The massive project, including a 50-story building, marina and additional city streets, received a hostile reaction from a crowd of about 100 people.

“What you’re seeing today is a very preliminary plan.” cautioned Chris Currey, a senior executive at the corporation handling the project. “We haven’t figured everything out yet.”

The developers have been negotiating with the city’s Economic Development Corp. on the Seaport plan, which still needs further approval, including a vote from the full City Council.

Residents opposed to the plan believe the building would ruin the historic feel of the cobble-stoned area and obscure views of the nearby Brooklyn Bridge.
