The eyes have it for NYPD

The NYPD really wants to keep an eye on criminals.

It launched a $500,000 program to scan the irises of prisoners at Central Booking and then again just before arraignment to confirm their identity.

It would take hours to match fingerprints.

The department introduced the initiative because two suspects charged with serious crimes recently walked out of court after posing as criminals charged with lesser offenses.

In one case, a serial robber on Staten Island managed to pose as a pot suspect and was set free after pleading guilty and getting time served.

The program began yesterday in Manhattan Criminal Court and will be expanded to the other boroughs.
