Kindle burning up paper books

In just four years, Jeff Bezos has upended the 400-year reign of the printed book.

Yesterday, the longtime chief of Amazon, the nation’s biggest online retailer of reading materials, crowed that sales of electronic books for the company’s Kindle e-reader had eclipsed combined sales of hardcover and paperback books.

For every 100 traditional print volumes sold last month, Amazon sold 105 e-books, the company said.

Amazon began selling Kindle readers four years ago and has amassed more than 950,000 e-book titles, which can also be read on an array of mobile devices.
