Paul Vallone wins City Council primary

A 40-year tradition continues for the Vallone family — thanks to a few dozen voters.

Paul Vallone, son of former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr., has been declared the winner of a close, five-way Democratic primary race to replace disgraced Councilman Dan Halloran in Queens.

Vallone won by 190 votes out of about 8,700 cast.

“At the end of the day, it’s under 200 votes [for] . . . the margin of victory. That’s like two votes per election district,” said second-place finisher Austin Shafran.

“But whether you lost by one or 1,000, it doesn’t really matter in the long run.”
Vallone Sr. served in the council from 1974 to 2001. His seat was assumed by Paul’s brother, Peter Vallone Jr., who ran for Queens borough president this year and lost in the primary.

Halloran chose not to seek re-election after his arrest on bribery charges in April.

“We look forward to uniting the Democratic Party and restoring honest and effective leadership to the 19th City Council seat,” said Paul Vallone’s spokesman, Austin Finan.
Vallone now faces Dennis Saffran in the general election in the heavily Democratic district.
