Wu hits the Target

Mark your calendars and sharpen those elbows, ladies.

In less than one month, Target will launch its hotly anticipated new collaboration with Michelle Obama’s favorite designer — New York-based wunderkind Jason Wu.

The retailer’s last partnership — with Missoni, back in September — was so popular, it paralyzed the store’s Web site, and merchandise completely sold out.

The Jason Wu for Target collection, which boasts 53 pieces and goes on sale Feb. 5, is expected to be a major hit with everyone from teen girls to female executives in their 40s.

Celebrating the idea of an American girl in Paris, the feminine line bursts with classic A-line dresses, boy-meets-girl blouses, high-waisted skirts, handbags and silk scarves, all of which will be available on Target.com and in stores.

“My inspiration came from the French new wave films — in particular the women who defined this movement, such as Anna Karina and Jean Seberg,” Wu, 29, tells The Post.

“I wanted the collection to have a sophisticated voice with an American sportswear spin.”

The Taiwanese-born designer, who

normally dresses the Bergdorf set, says it was an “exciting challenge” to bring his trademark insouciant elegance to the masses. Wallet-friendly prices start at $19.99 for a floral scarf and top out at $59.99 for a flared dress.

“The goal was to work with new materials and techniques that gave the collection an expensive look and feel,” says Wu, adding that his favorite piece is the black faille dress with a nude patent belt (see page 34).

“It’s so timeless, and the detailing of the lace lining makes it really special,” he says of the demure frock.

After launching his eponymous collection in 2006, Wu became a household name when the first lady wore his white, one-shoulder gown to her husband’s inaugural ball, and he remains high on her roster of go-to designers for major White House events.

That recognition made him an ideal choice for one of Target’s popular collaborations, which in the past have included Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen and Proenza Schouler.

“Jason is one of the most influential designers in the fashion industry today,” says Trish Adams, senior vice president of apparel and accessories at Target.

“We knew that guests would love finding his chic signature style at Target. His designs are perfectly suited for a springtime collection.”

Wu says he was flattered by the partnership.

“I have been a fan of Target’s dedication to great style and their successful collaborations for a while,” enthuses Wu, noting that he’d love to see the White House style icon give his new bargain-priced collection a whirl.

“I certainly hope so,” Wu says. “Mrs. Obama is the perfect example of someone who truly has her own sense of style, and shows us that price point is not a factor in looking great.”

The Post got a sneak peek at the new line, and all we can say is: Wu knows how to woo a lady.
