Fall florals bloom on the red carpet

It was a garden of delight on the red carpet on Sunday at the 65th annual Emmys.

Indeed the carpet was strewn was more than its fall share of florals, color and — dare we say it — some fashion risk.

Leading the petal power pack was a pair of “Girls” stars, Lena Dunham in a green floral Prada gown and Zosia Mamet in a watercolor abstract by Honor. Kiernan Shipka of Mad Men” looked pretty as a daisy in a floral appliqued confection by DelPozo, Kerry Washington was no shrinking violet in Marchesa, and Julianna Margulies supplied an arty take in a white column with a black floral pattern by Reed Krakoff.

The berry hues from last year’s awards made a comeback with the color on fall runways and Heidi Klum was a standout in statuette form in sparkly Versace. Morena Baccarin of “Homeland” sported her pregnancy with regal elegance in Alexander McQueen. Michelle Dockery of “Downton Abbey” was a breath of fashion air in a bi-color rust and burgundy Prada gown. And Linda Cardellini of “Mad Men” made a striking sculpture in Donna Karan Atelier.

Besides the color of wine and roses, pink, along with florals, are unlikely trends for fall. Allison Janney looked like a hot house flower in fuschia satin Lorena Sarbu and Cobie Smulders was pretty in pink J. Mendel.

Shine, in one texture or another, also dominated this year’s awards. Zooey Deschanel was silvery blue ’60s throwback in J. Mendel, as was Julia Louis Dreyfuss in a silvery modernist column by Monique Lhuillier. And Claire Danes was pale perfection in Armani Privee lace and illusion gown.

A handful of attendees were on a blue streak with Tina Fey erasing any previously awkward moments in a cobalt blue stunner by Narciso Rodriguez. Jessica Pare of “Mad Men” was terrific in a teal Oscar de la Renta dance dress, and Allison Williams worked her signature simplicity in a strapless gown by Ralph Lauren.

Aside from a strange minor trend of see-through skirts on the carpet (hello Julianne Hough, we’re talking to you), slits were tearing up the parade of strapless monotony this year, with Anna Faris showing off hers in lemon yellow Monique Lhuillier.
