7 weirdest Emmy moments

If you felt like last night’s Emmys were the strangest ever, you’re not alone. Somewhere between the endless memorials and bizarre interpretive dancing, #weirdemmys was trending on Twitter. Here are seven of the night’s most peculiar moments:

  1. 1. Merritt Wever's 11-word acceptance speech

The night got off to a strange start when Wever won the award for Best Supporting Actress for Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie.” Her speech went like this: “Thank you so very much. Um, I gotta go, bye.”

  2. 2. Will Ferrell’s kids

Funnyman Ferrell livened up the joint with a strange stunt at the end of the telecast. He brought three young boys up on stage. “You have to go to the bathroom? I asked you backstage if you had to go to the bathroom,” he said to one of the boys donning a soccer uniform. “You’re just going to have to hold it. This is the Emmys. Don’t blow this for me!”

Turns out the boys were his real sons — Magnus, 9, Mattias, 6, and Axel, 3. He joked backstage after the show that he couldn’t find childcare.

  3. 3. Jeff Daniels wins Best Actor in a Drama for panned season of HBO's "The Newsroom"

Huh? He beat Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”) and Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”)?

  4. 4. Another memorial?

In addition to the long, annual In Memoriam segment, there were major memorial speeches for Cory Monteith, James Gandolfini, Jean Stapleton, Gary David Goldberg and Jonathan Winters. When “Modern Family” executive producer Steve Levitan accepted the award for Best Comedy he even joked: “Well, this may be the saddest Emmys of all time but we could not be happier.”

  5. 5. Photo bomb guy

Host Neil Patrick Harris was doing his hosting thing, when this guy got awkwardly caught in the wide camera shot. When he realized he was on screen he tried to subtly slide-shuffle out of sight.

  6. 6. Kevin Spacey swats the camera

Don’t bug Spacey when he’s trying to enjoy the 17th memorial of the night, cameraman.

  7. 7. Interpretive dance number

Yes, award shows have done the interpretive dance thing before, but this ditty, done to Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” was long and kooky. It started with Harris crashing the choreographers’ meeting “reality TV style,” transitioned into a manic jazz hands number and, eventually, dancers dressed like the stars of nominated shows.
