Bike club completes fiery stunt

Six months after the Findon Skid Kids’ failed fire jump left three teenagers in hospital, the club has made a triumphant leap through the flames.

It was February when the flaming cardboard the riders jumped through failed to break up as planned and instead stuck to the riders leaving spectators to rush to their aid with blankets and water.

On Sunday however, several practice jumps and new safety measures made it smooth riding through the fireball that had hundreds of fans cheering.

Findon Skid Kids President Allan Staunton said despite February’s unfortunate mishap, the jump was never in doubt of returning.

“Everything was done to the right safety specifications,” he said.

“We couldn’t can it after 55 years. It is a tradition that is part of this club. Had the conditions been different – if it was windy – we probably wouldn’t have done it.”

Spectators held their breath as the cardboard frame was doused in fuel before it shot flames tens of metres into the sky.

The Findon Skid Kids display team gained global coverage for their stunt riding, including what the “world-famous fire jump” in the 1970s. None of the riders injured in February jumped today.

Staunton said the competition held throughout the day was a huge success and the fire jump was a great way to cap off the event.

“It’s a very competitive sport and we saw some great riding today,” he said.

“We’ll be hosting the international event here in November and we’ll do the jump then again too — it’s very popular.”
