CATCHING UP: JETS

Brett Favre’s ankle is getting the attention, but defensive tackle Kris Jenkins’ back may be of equal concern to the Jets heading into their Week 4 matchup with the Cardinals.

Both men are expected to play Sunday, but it’s more about if their injuries will effect them on the field. The defensive line was swallowing up Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson until Jenkins was forced to leave Monday’s game with the injury.

“I am feeling better and I have been getting treatment working on it,” said Jenkins, whom the Jets acquired this offseason from the Panthers for draft picks.

“I am not at liberty to go into detail about anything, but I am taking it day by day doing the best I can. Obviously, I am not on (injured reserve) so it’s a plus (smiling). I am working on it day by day and doing what I can to get back on the field with my teammates.”

Jenkins parted with the Jets’ double talk for a moment and admitted he almost returned to the 48-29 loss to the Chargers.

“That is accurate,” said Jenkins, who would play a crucial role in stifling Edgerrin James and the Cardinals’ running game Sunday.

“It was real close. If I would have had to or if I felt like I absolutely needed to get back out there I would have had to sacrifice myself a little bit and deal with the pain. It was a call on the sideline and I had to roll with it.”

Favre rolled his ankle in the third quarter and a limp was noticeable. But he fully plans on extending his record number of consecutive games started to 257, all but four with the Packers.

“That’s what I’m here for,” Favre said. “No one wants to be injured. I feel like we did some good things in the game the other night. We obviously lost. (There are) a lot of things to clean up.

“I love to play. I didn’t come here, first of all, to lose. I didn’t come in here to get hurt and sit and watch. That’s why I played every game. I could have sat out numerous games and no one would ever have questioned the fact that I was hurt. I wouldn’t let it get that far.”

Favre may be limited during practice, which could be a factor considering the offense looked out of synch for most of the night against San Diego. But Favre said he was not concerned.

“Being that I need the work, today as well as any other day, mentally, has to be the most important thing,” Favre said. “It’s a short week. We’re cramming a lot of stuff in. I’m not really concerned about the lack of or how much (I) practice. But it’s more mentally, that’s what’s most important.”
