LICENSE TO ILL

I applaud The Post for publicly exposing the NYS DMV “IDs for Illegals,” Editorial, Sept. 16).

After 9/11, the Pataki administration implemented critical security measures on driver licenses to foreign visitors. These licenses were marked with a “temporary” legend and given the same expiration date as the holder’s visa.

But, as The Post pointed out, Spitzer’s plan removed these restrictions and allowed foreign visitors to get permanent licenses that remained in effect for eight years. Now, 23,000 foreign visitors have valid NY driver licenses that will outlast their legal right to remain in this country.

By highlighting this important homeland- security matter, perhaps The Post will shame the commissioner into doing what is right to protect the public.
