RANGERS NAME DRURY CAPTAIN

The Rangers will open the season in Prague tomorrow against the Lightning with Chris Drury wearing the captain’s “C” and current linemates Scott Gomez and Markus Naslund wearing the associate captains’ “A,” The Post has learned.

Drury, long renowned for his leadership abilities, was appointed the Blueshirts’ 25th captain by head coach Tom Renney, who unveiled his letter-wearing leadership group at tonight’s team dinner in Prague.

“Chris Drury is a natural leader who possesses all of the qualities and characteristics we desire from our Captain,” GM Glen Sather said in a statement. “He has always been known as a clutch performer and a winner. Chris leads by example with his tireless work ethic on and off the ice, and is extremely deserving of this honor.”

Drury, who succeeds Jaromir Jagr, becomes the second American-born captain in franchise history. Brian Leetch wore the “C” from 1997-98 through 1999-2000.

Drury, 32, is entering his 10th season in the NHL and second with the Rangers.

Naslund, who signed as a free agent this summer, had been captain of the Canucks since the 2000-01 season. This will mark the first season of Gomez’s NHL career in which he has worn a letter.
