Mike Woodson is serious about J.R. Smith possibly going from sixth man to starting shooting guard this season.
For the second time since camp opened, the Knicks coach said if Iman Shumpert doesn’t play well, he would consider making Smith, the NBA’s reigning Sixth Man of the Year, a starter. Smith, rehabbing from offseason knee surgery, could be ready by late in preseason, according to Woodson. However, Smith has to sit out the first five regular-season games for violating the league’s drug policy.
Woodson reiterated he wants to go with a traditional shooting guard this season rather than last season’s backcourt featuring two point guards.
Shumpert, coming off a sore shoulder, likely will start the preseason opener Wednesday in Providence against the Celtics, with point guard Raymond Felton — unless Woodson feels Shumpert isn’t ready.
“I’d like to go with a big lineup with Raymond and either J.R. or Iman at the two[-guard],’’ Woodson said. “If I can get to that point where they’re competing [for it]. We’ll see how it plays out.’’
Shumpert started last season after returning Jan. 17 from an ACL tear. Woodson may be trying to light a fire under Shumpert in not guaranteeing him a starting job.
Smith said last week he would no longer complain about the sixth man role.
“We’re still trying to figure out Iman [and his role],’’ Woodson said. “I’m going to turn to him, play him and [get] his confidence in his game.’’
Woodson indicated Shumpert is more prepared to learn this season.
“When he came in, some of the veteran guys got to him early and he was able to listen,’’ Woodson said. “With young players, you got to listen and accept coaching. As coaches, we’re not always right. But you have to accept coaching. He’s done that.’’
Shumpert, who played just one summer league game in July to Woodson’s dismay, appears more humble.
“It’s my first [full] training camp actually so he’s right on the money,’’ Shumpert said regarding Woodson’s recent critique on his flawed offensive repertoire. “The pro game is different. I’m getting adjusted to it. I have a lot more basketball to play.’’
