Zoning rules in School District 22 may soon change — and now’s the time for parents to give their input.
The district’s Community Education Council (CEC) will host a meeting on March 5 to reveal the city Department of Education’s (DOE) proposal to redraw zoning lines.
Zoning lines determine if children can attend the public schools in their neighborhood or must travel farther out.
By press time, full details about the rezoning proposals were not available.
However, CEC President Christopher Spinelli explained that the zoning changes would allow students to attend schools closer to their homes.
A rezoning would impact these schools — P.S. 109 at 1001 East 45th Street, P.S. 134 at 4001 18th Avenue, P.S. 245 at 249 East 17th Street, P.S. 139 at 330 Rugby Road, P,S. 217 at 1100 Newkirk Avenue, P.S. 193 at 2515 Avenue L, P.S. 269 at 1957 Nostrand Avenue, P.S. 315 at 2310 Glenwood Road, P.S. 198 at 4105 Farragut Road, P.S. 361 at 3109 Newkirk Avenue, and P.S. 198 at 4105 Farragut Road.
“P.S. 109 is one of the schools that needs to be rezoned,” Spinelli said. “You have a school where everyone is being bused in and children who live across the street can’t go to that school. That’s the kind of inequity that we’re hoping to correct with this.”
At the CEC meeting, school staffers, parents and community residents will be invited to ask questions and offer their opinions on the rezoning proposals.
The CEC must vote to approve the proposals. No vote will be taken at the March 5 meeting.
“There’s no rush to get this done this year. We specifically did it this way so it couldn’t be utilized for this September. It gives us a wider window to look at this and entertain public comment,” Spinelli said.
