WEINER BID NOW IN LIMBO

After insisting he will challenge Mayor Bloomberg this year and raising $5.2 million for his campaign, Anthony Weiner touched off speculation yesterday that he is dropping out of the race.

Rep. Weiner (D-Brooklyn/Queens) e-mailed supporters to say he will decide his course when Congress recesses in June.

“At the beginning of the summer when Congress takes a break, I will look at the lay of the land again and try to determine the best political course,” he wrote. “So you won’t see me holding campaign rallies. You won’t see me knocking on doors asking for votes.”

“Sounds like to me like he’s putting off the decision and is unlikely to run,” Democratic consultant George Arzt said.

“He’s leaving because he’ll lose. He doesn’t have the money to go up against $80 million,” Arzt added, quoting a figure Bloomberg aides have said the billionaire mayor would spend in a general election.
