EX-MET IS GUILTY IN BATTERING

A former Mets relief pitcher faces up to a year in jail after a Queens jury convicted him yesterday of beating his girlfriend at a hotel near Shea Stadium.

It took jurors one hour to find Ambiorix Burgos, 24, guilty of misdemeanor assault after a four-day trial. His sentencing is set for April 3.

Maria Lopez, 26, of Pennsylvania, had described on the stand how Burgos threw her against a wall of their Holiday Inn room last September, then slapped, punched and stepped on her as she cowered on the floor.

The beating came after Lopez had just told Burgos she needed to go home to register her kids for school.

Within days, Burgos was busted in the Dominican Republic on unrelated charges he killed two pedestrians in a hit-and-run. The Mets released him in December.
