CHINATOWN PRE-K TOTS REPRIEVED

Parents of prekindergarteners at one of the city’s premier public elementary schools who were told they’d have no guarantee of a kindergarten slot there have been granted a reprieve.

Education officials have agreed to give tots at Shuang Wen (PS 184), an award-winning dual-language school in Chinatown, a slot next school year if they live in District 1 and list that school as their top choice on their kindergarten application.

Parents were originally told they’d have to apply to a districtwide lottery like everyone else.

Officials cautioned that this was a one-year deal contingent on the school working toward a 50-50 balance between Chinese- and English-speaking pupils to meet Department of Education guidelines for dual-language programs.
