Rider tops Iona for 5th straight

Tommy Pereira scored 14 points, and Jonathon Thompson and Daniel Stewart had 13 each as Rider won its fifth straight game, 67-62 yesterday over Iona in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Thompson’s free throw with 3:10 remaining put the Broncs (11-9, 6-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) ahead to stay, 60-59.

Tavon Sledge’s layup for Iona had tied the game 59-59, ending a stretch of 5:14 without a field goal for the Gaels (12-7, 6-2).

Iona’s total matched its season low. The Gaels, who had won six straight, were averaging 82.6, third highest in Division I.

Indiana 67, Northwestern 59

In Evanston, Ill., Cody Zeller scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and No. 2 Indiana beat Northwestern.

Jordan Hulls added 15 points. Christian Watford scored 14, and the Hoosiers (16-2, 4-1 Big Ten) hung on after things got tense down the stretch.

The Wildcats (11-8, 2-4) pulled within five three times, but the Hoosiers prevailed after seeing a six-game win streak end with a loss to Wisconsin last week.

N.C. State 66, Clemson 62

In Raleigh, N.C., freshman T.J. Warren scored 21 points while Richard Howell scored the go-ahead basket with 1:56 left to help No. 14 North Carolina State hold off Clemson.

Howell finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolfpack (15-3, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who never trailed yet still found itself in a tight game against a league opponent that wouldn’t go away.

Devin Booker scored a career-high 27 points for the Tigers (10-7, 2-3).
