SURGERY FOR ST. VINNY PLAN

Landmarks officials yesterday sent developers back to the drawing board to redesign a complex of residential towers and townhouses on the site of the current St. Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission, which already has approved the construction and design of a new hospital on the west side of Seventh Avenue, told developer Rudin Management to downsize the residential project.

The tallest tower proposed for the site on the east side of Seventh Avenue between 11th and 12th streets would have to be lower.

But the commissioners didn’t specify how much smaller the project should be.

St. Vincent’s and Rudin teamed up to create a new hospital and replace the existing collection of eight medical buildings with the residential development.

Rudin will pay St. Vincent’s roughly $300 million toward the $800 million hospital tower.
