Dolphins, Porter get last word

There’s been no shortage of words exchanged between the Jets and Dolphins this season, and some of the loudest voices in the week leading up to yesterday’s game belonged to Joey Porter and Kerry Rhodes.

The buildup before this battle of mediocre teams led to the two players getting into a shoving match on the field at Giants Stadium before Miami beat the Jets for the second time this season, 30-25.

“At some point in time, the talking and all that stuff has to come to a stop,” said Porter, who made two tackles in the victory. “I told you, we could talk until we’re blue in the face, but you’ve got to play the game.”

As for the pre-game fireworks between the two, Porter said: “It was nothing. Just typical them trying us and going too far, pushing us to the limit. It got us fired up and we won the game.”

Rhodes didn’t speak to reporters before he made a quick exit after the game, which wasn’t decided until Mark Sanchez’s pass intended for Dustin Keller fell incomplete with 1:16 left.

“Trash-talk doesn’t really pay off, I guess,” Ronnie Brown said.

The back-and-forth began in the preseason, with Rex Ryan getting in the mix all the way through this week, when Porter criticized Rhodes for talking too much.

“To put them behind us, beat them two times in a row, it’s big for us,” Porter said. “I hope it leaves an impression on them when they do face us next year.”

Jason Taylor helped break up the tussle between Porter and Rhodes and tried to play peacemaker after the game, as well.

“I don’t want to take that bait,” Taylor said of the animosity between the two teams. “They talk a lot. The win says enough. . . . We’re 2-0 against them. What more do you need to say?”

Even Porter agreed with that sentiment.

“We won,” Porter said when asked if the Dolphins had gotten the last word. “That’s always the last word.”
