The next ‘HS Musical’

The Disney Channel is unleashing a new ‘tween musical movie sensation.

The newly commissioned “Lemonade Mouth” is being positioned as the network’s next attempt at recreating “High School Musical“-level madness.

The movie, based on a book by Mark Peter Hughes, centers around five high school freshman from Rhode Island who meet in detention, discover each others’ musical talents and decide to form a band called Lemonade Mouth — a reference to the school’s frozen lemonade machine.

Distinguishing this garage band from all the rest is that it incorporates unusual instruments including the ukelele and congas.

Debra Martin Chase, who worked on Disney’s “The Cheetah Girls” franchise, will produce, says the Hollywood Reporter. “Lemonade Mouth” is expected to premiere at the end of the year.

Disney musical movies have a record of blockbuster activity. “High School Musical 2” remains the most-watched cable program of all time, attracting 18.6 million viewers when it aired in 2007, and the Jonas Brothers’ “Camp Rock,” was the most-watched telecast of 2008, drawing 10.1 million viewers.
