Sweet Lou one to beat in Meadowlands Pace

Sweet Lou is the 5-2 morning-line favorite for Saturday night’s $600,000 Meadowlands Pace at the Meadowlands Racetrack.

Driven by Dave Palone and trained by Ron Burke, Sweet Lou has won four out of five starts this year, including his Pace elimination last week.

“He’s always been a beautiful, intelligent horse to drive,” Palone said after the Pace elimination win. “I think his best game is chasing, who knows what will happen next week. Not too many horses come into this race looking to race from behind but I would love to find a helmet with him for a while.”

The remaining nine talented 3-year-old colts, including Heston Blue Chip, will work hard to keep Sweet Lou out of the winner’s circle.

Heston Blue Chip, the 7-2 second choice, also won a Pace elimination race, making him a perfect five-for-five this season.

According to Linda Toscano, trainer of Heston Blue Chip, the Meadowlands Pace is the race they’ve been focused on.

“Right from the beginning, that was the race we were trying to point him to and get him as sharp as we could for,” Toscano said. “Hopefully, it will work out.”

Toscano is the all-time leading female trainer at the Meadowlands and is looking to become the first woman to train a Pace winner.

“I’d rather be thought of as a good trainer than a good female trainer,” she said.

Saturday’s 13-race card starts early with first post at 6:35 p.m. The Pace is Race 11 with a probable post time of 10:15 p.m.
